QPR skipper Barton: England should not be playing at Wembley

QPR skipper Joey Barton feels England should be playing away from Wembley.

England played across the country for the seven years that Wembley was being rebuilt and Barton believes they should revert to that as a poor atmosphere at the ground hinders England's chances.

"If things carry on the way they are, they won't win a major tournament for 20 years," said the Queens Park Rangers midfielder. "They need to be a touring side, a team representative of England. We need to be unified and to do that England need to go to places like Anfield, St James' Park, Villa Park and Carrow Road.

"We're based at Wembley, which is a fantastic stadium with great facilities but there is no real atmosphere. It's too big. We need to think outside the box. What happens when Fabio Capello leaves? What are we left with?

"I am not saying the next manager definitely has to be an Englishman but when the criterion for players is to be English, it's quite degrading to the coaches in this country if a foreign manager is appointed.

"English coaches work hard at their jobs and becoming the manager of England is the pinnacle. If there are English coaches who can do as good if not a better a job than some previous foreign coaches, we should employ them.

"What we've learned through the process of having foreign managers is that their hearts and souls are not always in it.

"You care more about your own country than someone you work for. When you come in as a foreign coach, you come in as a salaried employee. When you're born and raised in that country and your family is from that country, it goes a lot deeper."
