QPR boss Mark Hughes feels he faces a losing battle in his bid for Fulham striker Bobby Zamora.
The People says Hughes made a move for Zamora within hours of taking over at Loftus Road on Tuesday.
But Fulham chairman Al Fayed has insisted he will not sell to Hughes as he is fuming about the Welshman's claims that the Craven Cottage club lack ambition.
Fulham are prepared to sell their England striker because of his strained relationship with manager Martin Jol.
But there is likely to be one price tag of around £7million for any other club and a higher valuation for QPR now that Hughes has taken over.
Zamora, who turns 31 tomorrow, is believed to be keen on the short move across west London.
And Rangers are the only club to make an official bid yet - although Sunderland, Aston Villa and Tottenham have all been monitoring his situation.
