Claude Puel refused to comment on the Southampton contract of Jose Fonte.

The Saints skipper is under contract at St Mary's until the summer of 2018 but the south coast club have offered him terms to extend his stay.

Portugal international Fonte, 32, is a target for both Manchester United and Liverpool and the Saints would be keen to tie him down as soon as possible, but Puel remains relaxed.

"Jose has a contract and after I don't speak about the contract of the players," he said.

"It's a story between the club and the player and this is private."
