Puel: Man Utd target Fonte not leaving Southampton

Southampton manager Claude Puel has made it clear that Jose Fonte is not leaving the club this winter.

The 32-year-old Portuguese defender has not appeared for the Saints in the Europa League this season, leading to speculation that he could be sold to Manchester United in January.

But Puel has denied suggestions that the south coast club have refrained from playing him in Europe so he is eligible to represent the Red Devils after he makes the move to Old Trafford next month.

"It's not true, about not playing so he can move in January," Puel said ahead of Thursday night's final group fixture against Hapoel Be'er Sheva.

"We prepare for an important game and for me it is only important to speak about the team and the game - other things concerning individuals is not part of the collective or important for me - about Jose or not."

Puel added: "He would have played against Sparta (Prague) but he had an injury.

"I am happy and satisfied about Maya Yoshida and we are lucky to have good centre backs in this team.

"The others deserve game time as well. It's all about balance with the other players.

"It's important to consider all the team."
