But the arrival of Dutch director of football Marcel Brands has helped throw another name in the hat.

Former Barcelona midfielder Cocu has just won his third Dutch title and he could look to Merseyside for a new challenge. Brands held the same role at PSV for eight years before making the move to Goodison - helping to appoint Cocu and working successfully with the 47-year-old.
