Promotion was the goal when I took over at Norwich - Neil

Norwich City manager Alex Neil has revealed that he took over Canaries in January with the goal of promotion in his first season at the club.

Neil led the club from 11 points off top to finish third in the Championship after taking 49 points from their last 22 games.

Norwich eventually earned the promotion to the Premier League after beating Middlesbrough 2-0 in the play-off final at Wembley on Monday to achieve the goal set when he arrived from Hamilton Academical.

When asked whether he thought the Canaries had a realistic chance of promotion when he took over as manager, Neil told Sky Sports: "Yes, when I took the job we wanted to gain promotion.

"Everybody talked about how strong the squad was and I believed if I could get us up and running we would have a real shot.

"We obviously fell a little bit short in terms of automatic promotion but when we went into the play-offs I fancied our chances against anyone."
