Darren Ferguson is favourite for the job at Preston North End.
The Daily Mail says Preston want Ferguson to take charge at Deepdale after sacking Alan Irvine in a row over selling players.
The Scot's failure to turn around a run of poor results had put him under pressure before he clashed with the board over next month's transfer policy.
Preston's directors wanted Irvine to sell players to help balance the books but he feared weakening the squad would leave the club in a relegation battle.
