Sunderland may fail with their £6 million bid for Preston striker David Nugent.

The Guardian says it is not known if the bid will succeed because there is competition from Everton and Portsmouth, and with Nugent abroad with England's Under-21s it is unlikely he will wish to make a decision this week.

He has spoken of his boyhood support for Everton but that will be irrelevant if the club do not match Sunderland's offer.
