Preston earn point in battle to avoid the drop

Preston travelled back form Portsmouth with a vital point in their relegation fight following a 1-1 draw at Fratton Park. Pompey are now nine points adrift of the Championship play-off places whilst Preston are seven points adrift of safety.

Steve Cotterill felt Portsmouth were denied a perfectly good goal which was chalked off for offside.

Cotterill said: "It was a perfectly good goal. There was no problem with that whatsoever. There is no way in a million years it was offside - absolutely no way. It was impossible, and it was on the linesman's side as well.

"I've looked at it three times to make sure that if I come out and say something, it's the truth, and not a 'blag' from a whingeing manager. It was 100% a goal.

"We've been on the rough end of a couple of decisions over the last couple of weeks that are important at the stage we're at. When we're chasing like we've been chasing all season, it makes the players a little more anxious and a little more uptight."

On Pompey's play-off chances, he added: "What has happened with the other results hasn't changed things a lot. It's still nine points we have to close.

"Before the game I would have thought we needed six out of seven wins, or five wins and a draw and we'd be allowed one more defeat.

"So nothing really changes. We are capable of going on those runs because we have done it twice this season. We just need it once more.

"But really this season is amazing. We're sat here with 40 games on the board and I'm still being asked about the play-offs. I think it has been a marvellous achievement by everybody at the football club."

Preston boss Phil Brown was disappointed with his side's defensive display.

He said: "I'm disappointed, to tell you the truth. I thought we were worthy of coming in at half-time 1-0 up.

"But sloppy defending for the goal and free headers in the six-yard box are things I don't advocate at all.

"We've been done on detail today, not good play. That's the reason we're not sitting here talking about three points, as opposed to one."

On his side's survival chances, he added: "It's only as difficult as you make it. As far as I'm concerned, we showed enough promise to get something from this game, albeit only one point. We were looking for three, but we have to go to Doncaster and make sure we get three on Tuesday.

"Then we've got three out of the last five games at home. It's still in our hands now. Obviously when it comes to the mathematics of it, it will be in someone else's hands come the end of the season.

"If we've got one game to go and we've got to win that game to stay in the Championship, I'll take that now."
