Preston boss confident of retaining Sheff Wed target Mellor

Preston boss Phil Brown is hopeful that striker Neil Mellor will remain at Deepdale. Sheffield Wednesday have been heavily linked with a permanent move for the 28-year-old after he spent last season on loan at Hillsborough.

Mellor was allowed to join the Owls last summer after being transfer-listed by previous North End boss Darren Ferguson.

But Brown told BBC Radio Lancashire: "If you've got a player who's going to score you 20 to 25 goals in one season it's a good start for me.

"I've spoken to him and Neil is very positive about playing for North End.

"I spoke with Neil after the season finished and he believed there was a Championship club coming in for him - he wanted to play Championship football but now he's very positive about giving Preston a full season."
