PREMIERSHIP WRAP: Chelsea are Premier League champions as Manchester United also win on final day of season

Chelsea went into the final round of matches knowing a victory would secure them the title ahead of Manchester United. At the end of ninety minutes both teams had scored 12 goals and earned comfortable victories.

But United's 4-0 win over Stoke at Old Trafford proved academic as Chelsea thumped ten-men Wigan 8-0 at Stamford Bridge to claim the Premiership crown in style.

It was the fourth time this season the Blues had scored seven in a Premier League game.

Second-placed Manchester United had needed Chelsea to slip up, but they did all they could, beating Stoke 4-0 at Old Trafford.

Darren Fletcher's effort in the 31st minute put United ahead and Ryan Giggs struck seven minutes before the break to make it 2-0. Danny Higginbotham scored an own goal nine minutes after the break to make it 3-0 and Park Ji-sung rounded off the scoring six minutes from time, but in the end to no avail.

Europa League finalists Fulham clearly had their minds on Wednesday's final as they went down meekly 4-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Andrey Arshavin, Robin van Persie and a Chris Baird own goal made it three by half time and Alberto Vela rounded off the scoring six minutes from time.

Burnley in their final Premier League outing before an immediate return to the Championship recovered from two goals down after half an hour to triumph 4-2 over Tottenham at Turf Moor.

Spurs raced into the lead through Gareth Bale and Luka Modric but Steven Thompson, Martin Paterson, Jack Cork and Wade Elliott stunned Champions League-bound Tottenham with a spirited fightback.

Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Mancini, watched their respective West Ham and Manchester City sides play out a 1-1 draw at Upton Park with Shaun Wright-Phillips' header cancelling out Luis Boa Morte's opener.

Bolton ended their season with a home win courtesy of strikes from Kevin Davies and Ivan Klasnic in the 2-1 win over Birmingham for whom James McFadden replied after Christian Benitez's weak penalty had been saved.

Wolves came from behind at Molineux to defeat Sunderland 2-1.

Kenwyne Jones hit an early opener for the visitor's but Kevin Doyle replied almost immediately.

Michael Turner and Jack Colback both saw red for Sunderland before Frenchman Adlene Guedioura scored the late winner.

Richard Dunne's own goal six minutes from time handed Blackburn all three points at Aston Villa and ensured that Sam Allardyce's side ended the campaign in the top half of the table.

Everton left it late before Diniyar Bilyaletdinov struck in the 90th minute against relegated FA Cup finalists Portsmouth, while Liverpool's clash with Championship-bound Hull City at the KC Stadium ended goalless.
