PREMIER LEAGUE WRAP: Liverpool go top as Chelsea, Wigan, Everton win

Six matches were played on the third Saturday of the 2011/12 Premier League season with four sides getting winning results.

The midday kick-off saw Wolves hold Aston Villa to a scoreless draw in the West Midlands derby at Villa Park as Mick McCarthy and Alex McLeish's men both maintained undefeated starts to their campaign.

Wigan Athletic came up with a 2-0 win at home over QPR thanks to a neat brace from Franco Di Santo whilst Everton somehow managed to snatch a 1-0 result at Ewood Park over Blackburn Rovers.

Steve Kean's charges failed to convert twice from penalties before Mikel Arteta did the job from the spot for the Toffees in injury time after Christopher Samba had been adjudged to have fouled Marouane Fellaini in the area.

Didier Drogba suffered a sickening concussion as his Chelsea side won 3-1 at home over new boys Norwich City with Jose Bosingwa, Frank Lampard (penalty) and debutant Juan Mata on the scoresheet whilst Canaries skipper Grant Holt scored his first top flight goal as Paul Lambert's side, which was reduced to ten men when goalkeeper John Ruddy was questionably sent off, were unable to overhaul Andre Villas-Boas' clan at Stamford Bridge.

Norwich's fellow newcomers Swansea City again failed to score but were able to secure a second point of the season with a 0-0 draw at home to Sunderland despite plenty of chances from both sides as Liverpool showed their vast improvement from last season with a comfortable 3-1 home win over Bolton.

Summer signings Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam opened their Reds accounts either side of a Martin Skrtel header before Ivan Klasnic grabbed some consolation for Owen Coyle's Trotters in injury time.

Sunday sees Newcastle United host Fulham at St James' Park followed Manchester City's trip to Tottenham, West Bromwich Albion's home clash with Stoke City and big hitters Manchester United and Arsenal doing battle at Old Trafford.
