PREMIER LEAGUE WRAP: Chelsea draw, Arsenal lose, West Ham relegated

Day two of the penultimate weekend in the 2010/11 English Premier League season was completed today with five very surprising results.

Firstly, Newcastle United were able to hold second-placed Chelsea to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge with a late equaliser courtesy of Steven Taylor to grab a share of the points for the travelling Toon Army.

Earlier, Branislav Ivanovic scored for the Blues before Jonas Gutierrez was the recipient of some luck with a Ryan Taylor free-kick deflecting in off him for the initial leveler.

Brazilian centre-half Alex put the home side back in front with a fine header in the 83rd minute but his Magpies counterpart produced one of his own down the other end to make it a point each for both sides.

Still in London, and Aston Villa produced a solid performance to score a memorable win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Darren Bent did the damage with an early double before the Gunners found their feet and were close to scoring on plenty of occasions but could only manage one - a late Robin van Persie strike - as they lost their third match in their last four.

In the Midlands, Birmingham City were left on the brink of relegation as they were beaten 2-0 by Fulham at St Andrew's.

Brede Hangeland was the man of the moment for the Cottagers with a double, either side of half-time, to lead the London club to a fairly comfortable win that put them eighth on the league table as Tottenham produced the same scoreline at Liverpool to jump back to fifth.

Rafael van der Vaart kicked things off for the visiting Spurs with a ninth minute goal before Luka Modric wrapped it up just before the hour-mark by converting a penalty at Anfield, allowing Tottenham to replace the Reds in the top five.

And finally, West Ham United were relegated to the Championship as they gave up a two-goal lead to eventually lose 3-2 to Wigan Athletic at DW Stadium.

Demba Ba had two goals before the half-hour mark but the Latics clawed their way back through Charles N'Zogbia and Conor Sammon before N'Zogbia produced the winner in injury time to send the Hammer crashing out of the top flight.

Yesterday, Manchester United clinched a record 19th title thanks to a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool kept their survival hopes alive with a scintillating 4-3 home win over Bolton, Wolves did likewise with a superb 3-1 victory at Sunderland as West Bromwich Albion scored their fifth win in nine with a 1-0 result over Everton at The Hawthorns.
