PREMIER LEAGUE: Villa's mini-revival continues with three points at Wigan

Aston Villa continue to pull away from the drop zone at the expense of Wigan who remain in the bottom three following this 2-1 home reverse to the Midlanders. Wigan's miserable run of form continues as coming into this game they had only won one of their last eight league fixtures.

Not that Villa were much different form wise but they went into the game buoyed by Saturday's 1-0 victory against Manchester City and the capture of £18m signing Darren Bent.

Certainly the visitor's looked the more confident and ended the night six points clear of their fellow strugglers and claimed a second successive Premier League win for the first time this season.

All the goals came in the second half.

Villa went ahead four minutes after the break when Gabriel Agbonlahor headed home an Ashley Young corner.

Young then doubled Villa's advantage from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Hendry Thomas.

The visitor's then had to endure a nervy last ten minutes when James McCarthy reduced the arrears with a deflected effort.

Franco Di Santo, Hugo Rodallega and substitute Ben Watson all went close but Villa held firm.
