PREMIER LEAGUE: Villa held at home by Stoke

Aston Villa have recorded another 1-1 draw, this time being held by Stoke City at home.

The West Midlands outfit were denied by Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday and today scored first at Villa Park but could not hold out a Stoke side who grabbed just their third point on the road from their past seven outings.

Villa youngster Andreas Weimann opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a quite brilliant goal when he played a one-two with Stephen Ireland outside the area before curling into Asmir Begovic's far corner from about 20 yards.

Gabby Agbonlahor was close to adding a second for the home side in the 55th minute when he put his angled effort from Barry Bannan's through ball across goal and it proved to be a bad miss when Robert Huth grabbed a leveler for the Potters with just under 20 minutes remaining.

The German centre-back, who scored in the 2-1 win over Wolves on the weekend, got on the end of Jermaine Pennant's free-kick from the right to nod home at the back post.

Late in the match, Villa midfielder Chris Herd required a stretcher to help him off the pitch after he was knocked unconscious courtesy of some friendly fire from teammate James Collins but the added five minutes was not enough for either side to produce a winner as the spoils were shared in Aston.

The draw kept Villa in 15th position on the table, allowing them to move seven points clear of the drop zone, as Stoke dropped to 12th after Norwich City's win over Tottenham.

Villa Park, Birmingham - 30,100
