Southampton are now unbeaten in six Premier League matches after beating Hull City 1-0 at the KC Stadium.
Jose Fonte's 69th-minute goal separated the two teams as the Saints moved up to eighth on the table with a second away win on the trot which saw the Tigers remain 13th .
The only goal of the contest came in dramatic fashion when Hull keeper Steve Harper produced a brilliant double save to deny Fonte's header from a corner and Rickie Lambert's follow up before the Portuguese defender fired home the rebound despite the best efforts of Maynor Figueroa on the line.
Mauricio Pochettino's Saints thoroughly deserved their lead after hitting the woodwork twice earlier and in the end, it was a just result for the south coast club.
For Steve Bruce's Tigers, they will be hoping the likes of Stoke City, Crystal Palace and Sunderland all slip up on Wednesday night so they can remain clear of the drop zone.
