PREMIER LEAGUE: Newcastle ride their luck for Blackburn win

Newcastle move up to fifth after being made to fight all the way for their 2-0 win at struggling Blackburn Rovers. Newcastle had struggled on the road in recent games having only won one of their previous six outings but were helped on their way tonight by some wayward Blackburn finishing, including missing a penalty, scoring an own goal and finding the Toon keeper Tim Krul in fine form.

Rovers dominated the first period but failed to make it count and went in at the break a goal down through an early own goal from defender Scott Dann.

Ryan Taylor's shot was pausing little danger until it hit Dann and wrong footed keeper Paul Robinson.

But the home side's best chance to level arrived just before half-time when they were awarded a debateable penalty after Danny Simpson was adjudged to have fouled the impressive Anthony Modeste.

David Dunn took the spot kick but Krul saved well.

Newcastle enjoyed more possession in the second half but still Rovers pressed but the visitor's rearguard was well marshalled but needed a slice of luck as Leon Best headed against his own cross bar.

As the game entered its final minute and with Blackburn pushing forward, Newcastle broke quickly allowing Gabriel Obertan to seal the win.

For Blackburn their relegation worries continue and they now find themselves two points from safety and still without a clean sheet this campaign.
