Premier League to investigate Southampton abuse claims

Southampton have lodged an official complaint with the Premier League regarding the behaviour of referee Mark Clattenburg on Sunday according to the Daily Mail.

The match official reportedly used 'abusing and insulting' language directed at Saints skipper Adam Lallana after the midfielder appealed for a penalty in their 2-1 loss to Everton at Goodison Park.

Lallana called for a penalty when his cross late in the game appeared to strike the arm of Toffees defender Antolin Alcaraz, with Clattenburg turning down their claims for a spot-kick.

Referees' chief Mike Riley will now look into the incident after it was suggested Clattenburg spoke to Lallana in a manner not expected of a top match official.

Southampton have asked that Clattenburg not be appointed for any of their games while the investigation is taking place.
