Tottenham are expected to get the all-clear from the Premier League over their bid for Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe.

The Times says such a move raises a technical difficulty in that a Premier League rule states that a club may not re-sign players that they have sold within 12 months.

However, the rule was designed to prevent clubs circumventing loan regulations and it is understood that the Premier League board would give consent to a genuine transfer.
