PREMIER LEAGUE: Everton leave it late against Wigan

Everton shrugged off their off-field difficulties coming from behind to defeat local rivals Wigan 3-1 with two late strikes. Everton have a good record in north-west derbies and continued with three points at Wigan's expense courtesy of the first goals in English football from Apostolos Vellios and Royston Drenthe.

Wigan scored the opener from Franco Di Santo's deflected opener as the Latics tried to extend their recent run of form.

But almost immediately the Toffees restored parity with Phil Jagielka's close-range header.

And that is the way it stayed until Vellios put the hosts in front with six minutes remaining and the win was sealed deep into added time from fellow substitute Drenthe.
