Premier League Doctor’s Group hit out at Chelsea boss Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been criticised by the Premier League Doctor's Group.

The Portuguese tactician was fiercely critical of first-team doctor Eva Carneiro on the weekend in the wake of his side's 2-2 draw with Swansea City.

Dr Carneiro treated Eden Hazard on the Stamford Bridge pitch during the encounter which forced the Belgian to make his way off the playing surface to continue receiving treatment, reducing the Blues to nine men after goalkeeperThibaut Courtois had been sent off.

The actions of Dr Carneiro did not sit well with Mourinho, who feels his staff should know the game better, threatening to axe her from match day duties.

The story has been well-publicised over the last couple of days and now the PL Doctor's Group has weighed in, suggesting Mourinho treats his medical staff in an 'unjust' manner.

"The Premier League Doctors' Group considers that removing Dr Eva Carneiro from the Chelsea team bench for their next match is unjust in the extreme," read a statement.

"The Chelsea medical staff were clearly summoned on to the field of play by the match referee to attend to a player.

"A refusal to run onto the pitch would have breached the duty of care required of the medical team to their patient.

"It is a huge concern that Dr Carneiro has been subjected to unprecedented media scrutiny and a change in her professional role, merely because she adhered to her code of professional conduct and did her job properly.

"It is also of great concern that at a time when the both the Premier League and the Premier League Doctors group are intensifying efforts to safeguard player welfare, the precedent set by this incident demonstrates that the medical care of players appears to be secondary to the result of the game."
