Premier League chief Scudamore: Man Utd fans upset with owners for 35 years

Manchester United's anti-Glazer protests are concerning the Premier League.

Premier League chief Richard Scudamore admitted to being concerned about the mood of militancy sweeping some terraces.

"Yes, of course,'' he told the Telegraph, before arguing that this was not a first.

"A lot of Manchester United fans who are friends of mine, their mood about ownership hasn't been great for 35 years. They didn't particularly like the Edwards [family] seemingly making money. They didn't like the plc because they thought it was bad because it was all about shareholder value.

"Then we had the Irish owners and they had the upset with Alex Ferguson over the horse [Rock of Gibraltar]. Remember the protests at racecourses. Then they were suddenly their heroes because they were blocking other takeovers they didn't want to happen. I am struggling to put a perspective on what fans think about owners.''

It seems pretty clear at Old Trafford.

"I understand that. But it's hard to know what fans really want. When you are Manchester United, you can't be like the Barcelona model. The fans can't own United. I do understand they feel like they own United but they can't. Economically, it can't happen.

"The stakes are higher, there's a rolling news agenda that has to be filled and everything is magnified but I don't sit here linking it all to finances. Winning the Premier League, or finishing fourth, are high in a sporting context and a public profile irrespective of the finances. People's engagement with their clubs seems just as deep as ever.''
