PREMIER LEAGUE: Bellamy and Gerrard on target as Liverpool come from behind to defeat Newcastle

Liverpool may have had difficulty with the lesser lights of the Premiership but against those in the top half they continue to shine as tonight with a 3-1 home success over Newcastle. Until tonight's game the Premier League's bottom two (Blackburn and Bolton) had scored more league goals than Liverpool.

In fact the Reds had failed to score more than once in their last six matches at home but at least Steven Gerrard and a Craig Bellamy brace ensured the Anfield faithful were finally rewarded with some goals.

Newcastle had not scored at Anfield since 19 December 2004 and technically that is still the case as their first-half opener which gave them the lead was an own goal from Daniel Agger who diverted Yohan Cabaye's cross past Pepe Reina.

But the Toon's joy at a possible first Premier League win at Anfield since 1994 was short lived when Bellamy, a former Magpie, equalised within five minutes.

And Bellamy it was who put the home side in front after the break with a delightfully curled free kick after Agger had been fouled.

But Newcastle looked to be clawing their way back into the game until returning skipper Gerrard capped a fine display with a typical finish from a tight angle.

Again the £35m signing from Newcastle Andy Carroll failed to find the target for Liverpool although he did crash a header against the crossbar.

Liverpool now move up to fifth in the table whilst Newcastle have lost five of their eight league games after starting the season eleven games unbeaten.
