Premier League agree Speed tribute at weekend fixtures

The Premier League has confirmed that all fixtures this weekend will observe a minute's applause in memory of Wales manager Gary Speed. The 42 year old, who made 535 appearances in the competition through distinguished spells at Leeds, Everton, Newcastle and Bolton, was found dead at his Cheshire home on Sunday morning.

"Gary Speed was a wonderful ambassador for the game of football and will be remembered as an iconic player of the Premier League era," the Premier League said in an official statement.

"This will give clubs and fans the opportunity to show their appreciation for Gary's career and let his friends and family know that football's thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

Further tributes are set for Tuesday night when Cardiff host Blackburn Rovers in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup, while fans of Speed's former team Leeds are planning to sing the Welshman's name from the eleventh minute for 11 minutes - in memory of his time wearing the number 11 shirt at the club.
