Sunderland boss Gus Poyet says they'll work the loan market in January.
Poyet is unclear if he will receive players on loan or permanently.
"Certain kinds of players are only available on loan; certain kinds of players, you need to buy them and it costs a lot; certain players, they cost less because they are a nightmare or they have got some issues and you think you are the genius who can calm them down," he said.
One thing the Uruguayan was clear on is he will not be taking the vacant Newcastle United job, which he has been linked with in the past. He joked: "I think I had a bit of a love-hate relationship with them and the love's now gone!"
