Former Tottenham assistant boss Gus Poyet is being linked with Newcastle United.

The Mirror says Newcastle could move for Poyet as a firefighter while Joe Kinnear recovers from his triple heart bypass operation.

Poyet was on the original list to succeed Kevin Keegan in September and is close to director of football Dennis Wise.

Poyet was Wise's assistant at Swindon and Leeds before becoming Juande Ramos' No.2 at Tottenham in 2007. The former Chelsea and Tottenham star was sacked by Spurs last year.
