The Black Cats saw an 88th minute goal from substitute Fabio Borini and an extra-time winner from Ki Sung-yueng send them through to the final four of the league cup after Lee Cattermoleâ€™s 46th-minute own-goal gave Chelsea the lead.
After the 2-1 victory, Poyet spoke highly of his players who he hopes can turn that victory into positive form in the Premier League.
"That is massive,â€ť he told Sky Sports.
"People ask me before, which one do you want to win? Both â€“ I hope we can win on Saturday."
In regards to the win being the catalyst for things to come, Poyet added: "I hope so.
"That was the idea we want, to maintain that consistency.
"They played fantastic, they didn't stop.
"They gave everything today and I hope they have turned the corner."
