Potters midfielder Whelan says 'gutsy squad' can drive Stoke forward

Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan believes that the current Potters' squad is mentally tough enough to progress next season.

Stoke City endured a roller coaster campaign this term but the final day 1-0 victory over Southampton at the St. Mary's Stadium meant that the Potters finished in a respectable 13th position in the Premier League table.

Midfielder Glenn Whelan has admitted that Stoke's season has been a bit disappointing but expressed his encouragement at the fighting spirit his teammates have shown during difficult periods throughout the campaign.

The Irishman said: "It's been obviously a disappointing season overall, we've been chasing our tails right from the off. But it was good to finish the way we did, to give something to the fans who've travelled down on the last day of the season with nothing to play for. They came down in their numbers again. We can go off into the summer now with a positive.

"I'm sure the manager will look at things over the summer and see where we need to improve and I'm sure there will be changes with players coming in and players going out. I think the guts of the squad, especially the ones out there (at Southampton) want to push on and improve."
