Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon will hand the coaching reigns to good friend Miguel Angel Portugal should a deal for Getafe's Bernd Schuster fall through.
Portugal is a free agent after leaving Racing Santander at the end of last season and actually turned down a director's role at Real over concerns he may butt heads with sports chief Pedja Mijatovic.
Nevertheless, Portugal remains a key advisor to Calderon and will be handed the coaching job should Schuster's situation continue to drag on.
