Portsmouth remain in takeover talks with interested groups.
The Mirror says Pompey executive chairman Peter Storrie is in talks with two consortiums about a sale.
He said: "We had £12.5m left to pay on transfer deals and had to sell players. We were operating on our income and it was not adding up.
"We are close to having balanced books now and we do not have to sell players this summer, but if we do not get a new buyer by next season it does not bear thinking about."
