In-form Portsmouth striker David Nugent said he was sad to see former manager Tony Adams leave.
Adams has shown faith in Nugent during his tenure at the club and the striker flourished under the former Arsenal star.
"It was a bit of a shock getting up this morning and seeing the news," he told Sky Sports News.
"He's been in today wishing us all the best of luck for the rest of the season. Whoever comes in now has got a bit of a job on their hands. We'll see who comes in next.
"He called me aside saying 'You've done well in the past few games, keep it going and hopefully I'll work with you again in the future'. That was about it really.
"I was [surprised at Adams' exit]. He's given me a chance to play. I was happy for him to stay. I would have thought he would have been given a few more games, but it's the chairman's decision."
