Portsmouth have axed veteran goalkeeper Antti Niemi after having made just two reserve team appearances this season.
The 37-year old former Finland international has been earning £14,000 a week since August despite being third-choice shot-stopper but Pompey administrator Andrew Andronikou has begun to cull playing staff to keep wage payments to a minimum.
Niemi joined Portsmouth in August 2009 after coming out of retirement. Prior to that he spent time with Fulham, Southampton, Scottish clubs Hearts and Rangers and Denmark's FC Copenhagen after beginning his career in 1991 with Finnish team HJK Helsinki.
