Two members of Portsmouth's victorious FA Cup squad ended up losers after their winners' medals were stolen from the team's hotel, the club revealed on Monday.
The pair had hidden the medals in their washbags after the match but forgot to pack the bags when they left their riverside hotel in Windsor on Sunday morning.
As the team paraded through the south coast city yesterday, the bags were returned but the medals were missing.
Johnson, an England international defender, said he was "devastated" by the loss. "It is something you want to treasure for your whole life and show your kids and grandkids," he told The Guardian.
"I'm just hoping that, if I can't get it back, the FA might consider making a replica for me, because it's so soon after the match itself maybe they can see it as exceptional circumstances."
Peter Storrie, the Portsmouth FC chief executive, said the club was investigating the disappearance.
"If anyone has taken these medals away, they are depriving someone of their lifelong dream," he said.
A spokesman for Thames Valley police said officers were investigating reports of a burglary at the hotel on Saturday.
"The investigation is at a very early stage. The burglary was only reported to us today and we are looking at all the circumstances."
