Portsmouth open to shock Derby move for Nugent

Derby County boss Billy Davies is making a shock move for Portsmouth striker David Nugent.

The Mirror says Davies nurtured the England striker at Preston - and now plans to buy him from Harry Redknapp in one of the most sensational transfers of the summer.

The Rams chief hopes Pompey will sell Nugent after he was axed from the starting line-up for their 3-1 win over Bolton on Saturday. Davies will give counterpart Redknapp a chance to recoup his £6 million outlay on the 22-year-old, who also struggled to make an impact in pre-season games.

Derby's initial approach at the weekend was not discouraged by Pompey, who are willing to sell Nugent to raise cash for an ambitious attempt to land £12m-rated Nicolas Anelka from Bolton.
