Portsmouth No1 James admits Liverpool regret

Portsmouth goalkeeper David James has admitted some regret over the way he left Liverpool.

James decided to quit Anfield in the summer of 1999 as he was not prepared to play second fiddle to new arrival Sander Westerveld.

"I left for my own personal achievement," James said.

"I had a year left at Liverpool on my contract and could have gone on a Bosman, which would have been a financially more rewarding transfer, but it was important that I got back to where I wanted to be or get in a position where I was going to be in the England frame.

"I had some very good years at Liverpool as much as I had bad times but the experience was a very welcome one for me.

"There was regret but at the same time I had to go forward.

"Liverpool have done some great things since I left, but I also have had some great achievements so it was rewarding parting if you like."
