"Pompey look solid now and are a difficult side to break down," Awford told The News. "At the heart of it is Sol, who has been tremendous over the past four or five games at a time the club really need his quality and experience.
"Sol has held the team together. He's changed the way he plays. He no longer has pace to get him out of trouble. But he's still performing superbly. Since Paul Hart was appointed, Sol has gone about his job magnificently. I have not seen him put a foot wrong and I don't believe he has had enough credit for that.
"Even on Saturday he was busting a gut to get forward on occasions, hardly the actions of someone who doesn't care. I think last year Distin carried him a little bit on occasions but that is no longer the case. The entire back four have stood up, done well and are limiting teams to few chances.
"Sol's contract may be up in the summer but he's the sort of player who gets on with it and see what May brings. You know for certain he'll do everything humanly possible to ensure Pompey aren't relegated."
