Portsmouth lean on Kanu

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has revealed Nwankwo Kanu will be needed in the second-half of this season following the sale of Benjani Mwaruwari to Manchester City.

He said: "When I played Benji on his own he did it differently to when Kanu was there. It's like when Wayne Rooney played up front for England.

"I think he looked better when he moved to the left. I'm not saying Jermain couldn't play there but it's something I would have to look at carefully. Kanu holds the ball and when we do well away from home he has often played that role.

"Benji wasn't great at holding. He'd run and work in behind people. Kanu is a target. He holds it until you get up there and join him, and you play off him from there. Size can be important if you have someone with the strength to hold it.

"It's a special role and not an easy one to play."
