Portsmouth keeper James delighted with Crouch signing

Portsmouth goalkeeper David James has welcomed new signing Peter Crouch.

The 37-year-old regards the former Liverpool forward as one of the best English strikers in the country.

And he is convinced Crouch's all-round game can take Pompey on to another level.

He said: "I have to say, as soon as I heard about Crouchie coming here I was quite excited. I like him. I think it's top drawer. What we have with him is the dynamic - a player who offers us something on both fronts. He's a complete striker if you like.

"This is a player who scores goals yet can also keep the ball in play and be a target man. He has those talents which so many other strikers lack. He will be a perfect foil to Jermain Defoe in one respect and in another an ideal target man. What he gives us is immense.

"Even defensively it's someone to aim at who can keep possession. Being a team who defended from the front so well last season, he can also operate on that basis.

"The way he has played for England and Liverpool over the past couple of years shows what a quality player he is and I'm sure he'll be just as influential here."
