Portsmouth have fingers crossed for Varney

Portsmouth are hoping the injury sustained by Luke Varney on the weekend is not too serious.

The former Charlton Athletic and Blackpool striker hurt his knee in Pompey's 1-0 win at Burnley on Saturday and needed to be replaced in the 20th minute.

Varney had just returned from a hamstring injury and manager Michael Appleton is hoping the fresh knee problem is not too bad.

"It is not Luke's hamstring - he's got a bang to his knee," said Appleton.

"As he lifted the ball over (Burnley keeper Lee) Grant he caught his knee so it is more of an impact injury.

"It's a little bit sore at the minute and a bit stiff. He's had a little bit of ice and we are hoping it will settle down and we will see how bad it is.

"Today we will have an idea of where we are with him, so we will have to reassess him after that."
