Portsmouth fans plan to launch own club
Portsmouth fans want to form their own club.
The News of the World says members of fans' group the Portsmouth Supporters' Trust want to create their own version of FC United, the club set up by Manchester United fans in protest against the Glazer family.
The new team, dubbed 'AFC Pompey', would go into the Zamaretto Southern League - six divisions below the Premier League.
Pompey legend Guy Whittingham and former Republic of Ireland midfielder Alan McLoughlin are being lined up as the management team.
Trust spokesperson Colin Farmery said: "The club is in a great deal of trouble and we have to consider the worst.
"Our worst- case scenario is we either buy the club out of administration or form a new team. We all, fans and board members alike, want a professional team in the city playing a good standard of football.
"This is not an ego trip and none of us have aspirations to run a football club but we want to make sure the name lives on and that we have a team to go and watch next season.
"Ideally, we would like to buy or rent Fratton Park for home games."

why so far down? I thought a team could go in 3 leagues below?
I think someone is trying to push the panic button here. There is no way Portsmouth football club will go bust as there are too many people who would loose too much money.Nice idea to rent Fratton Park but l feel the rent and council tax would be too much of a burden on a new club.
"Ideally, we would like to buy or rent Fratton Park for home games." - how? It wouldn't be viable, unless you have a few million to buy it. If PFC go out the business, the ground will no doubt be replaced by a commercial or residential development.
