Portsmouth close to Nugent deal

Portsmouth appear to have won the £7million race to sign David Nugent after Sunderland ended their interest in the Preston striker.

The Championship side revealed last week they had accepted offers from two clubs, Sunderland and one other, for Nugent and it has now emerged the second club was Pompey.

Nugent was holding out for a switch to Everton but the Toffees refused to match Preston's valuation of the player so the 22-year-old will now travel to the south coast for talks.

Harry Redknapp has tracked his progress for some time and recently revealed he considered him the pick of the strikers outside the Premier League.

He said: "He's one of the few strikers in the lower division who will perform in the Premier League."
