Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp is thrilled with his capture of former Fulham midfielder Papa Bouba Diop.

Redknapp enthused: "He's good in the air and is a good footballer - he gives us a presence and people don't like playing against him.

"He's a monster of a man, he's intimidating and I'm delighted to have him here."

Although the deadline -day signing of Diop was questioned in some quarters, Redknapp has long been an admirer of the powerful midfielder and was determined to get his man.

"You need that power in your side these days.

"You need people who can get around the pitch and you need that pace as well.

"It is so important now.

"You need strength, but he can pass it as well.

"Diop is good on the ball, but you do need that bit of power in the team, no doubt."
