Portsmouth boss Redknapp recalls the night Fry wanted to send "heavies round"

As he marks 25 years in management, Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has been recalling a furious row with Peterborough supremo Barry Fry.

Redknapp, 61, has a reputation for wheeling and dealing in the transfer market.

He enjoyed putting one over then Maidstone boss Barry Fry.

Redknapp said: “They had a lad called Mark Newsom who I had been after for some time then I found out he was going to Tottenham on trial.

“I thought it was a done deal he would be sold to them.

“I got a call from someone at Maidstone saying Mark wasn’t signed to a contract as he was claiming dole money.

“I called Mark and persuaded him to meet me at Bournemouth. I wouldn’t let him leave until he signed for us.

“I called Barry and he said Mark was going to Spurs for £200,000. I said ‘Sorry Barry, I have signed him’. He asked if I had been drinking and I explained about the contract.

“Next thing I know Barry is ranting and raving saying he would be sending a couple of heavies round to kneecap me.”
