Portsmouth boss Redknapp: James deserved England chance

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has rapped England coach Steve McClaren for selecting Scott Carson ahead of his own goalkeeper David James in last night's Euro2008 defeat to Croatia.

In his column for The Sun, Redknapp wrote: "Courageous when he needed to be? Bravery or bravado? Only Steve can answer that.

"But when Scott Carson made one of the most elementary mistakes a keeper can make, you could hear the groans at Wembley that the manager had got it wrong yet again.

"What McClaren had done was heap the entire expectation of the country on Carson's young shoulders."

Redknapp also lamented: "I must confess I was a little bemused by the decision to go for Carson ahead of Robbo.

"Just why my own keeper at Portsmouth David James has suddenly dropped out of the reckoning and on to the bench is beyond me as for the past two years he has been the most consistent keeper in the Premier League."
