Portsmouth boss Redknapp delighted for to Defoe score

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp was delighted to see Jermain Defoe score from the spot in their 1-0 victory over Sunderland.

Defoe has now been installed as Pompey's official penalty-taker after spot-kick misses earlier this season by Nwankwo Kanu, former top-scorer Benjani Mwaruwari - which both cost points in goalless draws with Liverpool and West Ham - and Niko Kranjcar.

Redknapp said: "If we give Jermain chances he'll score goals and he could have had another couple today. That's why we brought him here.

"Sunderland were tough and I still can't see them going down even though Birmingham had a marvellous result and Wigan and Bolton also look like getting out of it.

"I'm just glad we're not involved in all that. We're giving it a go for Europe and we've got the players here to do it."
