Portsmouth boss backs James' England claims

Harry Redknapp has backed David James' England claims, but he does not believe he has a realistic chance of extending his international career.

Redknapp is adamant there is no better keeper in England than the 36 year old. But, with Steve McClaren seemingly happy to have Scott Carson, Chris Kirkland and currently injured Ben Foster as back-up to number one Paul Robinson, the Portsmouth manager feels a recall is highly unlikely.

"That kind of performance is what we have come to expect from David James," said Redknapp.

"I have been saying for a long time there is not a better goalkeeper in the Premiership than David James.

"In my opinion, he deserves to play for England. But it seems Steve McClaren has decided to look elsewhere, so I would be very surprised if he brings David back, even though his performances warrant it."
