Portsmouth boss Tony Adams admits they turned down the chance to sign Hull City star Geovanni 18 months ago.

"I remember the Yeovil game. Geovanni got a good goal," Adams recalled. "We actually didn't have him for just one game, he'd come on trial and was in training for a couple of weeks before that.

"I think at the time Harry took the decision that we had a few other players here that he wasn't better than what we had.

"I think he maybe knew he was going to get Jermain Defoe in or Peter Crouch. It didn't work out and the manager took the decision that he would have been just back-up for us.

"To be fair, he wasn't bad in practice either but you have to make those calls if you are the manager so it was decided it wasn't the right thing for Portsmouth to do at that moment in time.

"The call had to be made very quickly because Manchester City were waiting in the wings at that stage and it was decided not to have him.

"That's the call we had to make and at that moment in time he wasn't right for us. Having said that he was certainly one we may have missed."
