Porto president Jorge Pinto da Costa says Andre Villas-Boas moved to Chelsea for the money.
Villas-Boas won the Portuguese league, Portuguese Cup and Europa League crown in his single season as Porto coach.
But Pinto da Costa said: "Villas-Boas has pounds but he doesn't have courage. He was afraid of the ghost of Mourinho. He has a complex and is always thinking about Mourinho's ghost at Porto.
"When you think of a big European club the standard isn't Chelsea, it's Real Madrid, Barcelona or Manchester United.
"It was the lorry of pounds which opened the door for him. He said he was 'almost certain' to stay and a lot of pounds found room in that 'almost'.
"I had a Plan B before Villas-Boas left. He still had doubts about leaving and I already had Vitor Pereira as a fall back."
