Portland Timbers sack head coach Spencer

Portland Timbers have announced the sacking of head coach John Spencer.

The 41-year old Scotsman has been relieved of his duties after two years at the helm of the second-year MLS club after falling to a 3-0 loss to Real Salt Lake on the weekend.

The loss was the Timbers' eighth of the season in 17 games, leaving them second bottom on the Western conference table, and prompting the club to install general manager Gavin Wilkinson has interim coach.

"Obviously, this is a tough announcement," owner Merritt Paulson said.

"I want to thank John Spencer for his significant contributions to the Timbers. Our focus now is on improving the team and finding the right long-term head coach."

Spencer took the reins at Portland in August 2010 before leading the club to a sixth-place finish in the West and 12th overall in 2011.
