Portland Timbers get better of Independiente

Freshman MLS franchise Portland Timbers last night defeated Argentine outfit Club Atletico Independiente 2-0 in an international friendly.

Timbers coach John Spencer deployed 10 reserve team players for the start of the match at JELD-WEN Field but the undermanned outfit created many more chances than their opponents and came out on top in the end in front of more than 18,000 fans.

Sal Zizzo opened the scoring in the 36th minute when he received a pass from Eddie Johnson from the left before burying his shot past Hilario Navarro prior to Brian Umony heading home Mike Chabala's free-kick less than four minutes later.

It was Portland's first win in four exhibition matches and puts them in good spirits ahead of Saturday's home clash with Toronto FC.
